Advent Reflections: Dec 20th

400x400 advent artThe theologian Jürgen Moltmann once said that “the time of Christian life is the season of Advent.” Part to Christian life is expectation and waiting. We wait for Christ’s return, for change in our world, and during Advent, we await in the expectation of our savior’s birth. Today’s readings lead us to savor this thought in deeper reflection. We wait, not only for Christ’s birth, but in solidarity with the people of Israel who waited for the fulfillment of Isaiah’s prophecy. Many before us have waited in expectation of a sign from God; one that reminds us of God’s love for God’s people. As Catholics, we may also reflect on Mary’s expectations, as she waited to give birth to the savior foretold by Gabriel. We must not forget that the blessed Mother’s reaction, at first, was fear and anxiety. Together, all of us, the people of Israel, and Mary, may all await the birth of a small child; for the sign foretold by Isaiah. I find great joy in this solidarity across time, across culture, and across traditions. We may all unite in a single feeling, that of expectation. Even though we expect different things, we all understand the anxiety, anticipation, and mystery that comes from expectation. Let us now be gentle with one another as we hold each other through our anxieties. Let us all keep this in mind this Advent, and remember the contented joy that Mary felt when she consented to this anticipation: “May it be done to me according to your word."
