Lent 2019

Lenten Reflection: April 12, 2019

STM Lenten ImageIn today’s Gospel, Jesus emphasizes the importance of acting out of God’s love in order to strengthen our faith, which in turn helps us to spread the saving power of God to others. Especially in today’s world, it is crucial to notice those around us who are in need and to do everything in our power to help them to our fullest ability. God gives us the strength and courage to perform these merciful acts, and we should make sure to take full advantage of the tools that Our Lord provides us.

Jesus’ encouragement to the Jews who are accusing him of blasphemy to “believe the works, so that you may realize and understand that the Father is in me” correlates with the popular sentiment that “actions speak louder than words.” By witnessing the miracles and merciful work that Jesus does through Scripture, we are called to believe in God, and, in turn, to perform our own works to others around us. By doing good to others, we are reflecting our faith in God to others and the love He has.

This is especially relevant as we proceed toward the final days of our Lenten season. Because Lent is a season of giving and sacrifice, it is an excellent time to give time, resources, or prayer to those who could benefit from receiving some of God’s light in their lives. The “Act” pillar of Saint Thomas More’s mission helps us to recognize the power and importance of acting in God’s name for others. It is not only beneficial to help others believe; it is essential in strengthening our own beliefs as well.
