In the gospel, Jesus asks the man, “Do you want to be well?” Imagine being sick and someone asking you that same question. It seems like the obvious answer that any sick person would want to be healed, especially the man in the story who has been ill for thirty-eight years! However, when Jesus asks the man this question, he comes up with a variety of excuses about how why he cannot be healed.
In our lives, Jesus is offering us his help and healing. But Jesus is not a fairy godmother that will wave a wand to help you and then let you go on your merry way. Instead He teaches us that on the way to healing, we must turn away from our old lives and “sin no more.”
As we approach Easter, it is a perfect time to reflect on Jesus’ offer of healing. He is waiting for us with open arms, offering us an eternal promise. In what aspects in your life need healing and what is Jesus calling you to change?
