Lent 2019

Lenten Reflection: March 14, 2019

STM Lenten ImageToday’s gospel reading, Mathew 7:7-12, is a challenging and wonderful reading to study this Lenten season.  Jesus says to us “Ask and it will be given to you;” If Lent is a season of austerity this is quite a generous offer, but the offer does come with some caveats.  Jesus also tells us in Mathew 19:24 “Again I tell you, it is easier for a camel to go through a needle's eye, than for a rich man to enter into the Kingdom of God.”

It reminds me of finding the genie’s lamp and getting three wishes. How should I use my gift from God? What is the outcome I want in my life? What makes me truly happy? My daily moments of joy do not come from my possessions or accomplishments. They come from wonderful incites into the beauty of this word and the joy of helping alleviate suffering in the lives of others.

I have constructed and installed many bluebird boxes on water company property near my house. I can’t tell you how much joy it gives me to see mom and dad bluebird catching big juicy caterpillars and feeding them to their kids. Our soup kitchen gives me the opportunity to follow Jesus’s call to feed the poor.  The graciousness of our guests lets me know I am doing God’s work.  I can think of some valuable purchases in my life that have not given me as much joy as a heartfelt thank you or a view of a beautiful bluebird.  What brings you closer to God’s joy?
