Lent 2019

Lenten Reflection: March 17, 2019

STM Lenten ImageHow can I make myself equally receptive to the beauty that lies in times of difficulty as I am to the splendor of life's holiest moments?

In today's gospel Peter, John and James witness the transfiguration of Christ and immediately offer to pitch three tents, one for Moses, one for Elijah and one for Jesus. They feel the need to do so because they are caught up in trying to make this special moment last as long as possible. Often times we find ourselves living for the highest highs in our lives. We love going from one holy moment to the next, or dwelling on special events from the past, such as a niece's baptism, the confirmation of a child or the wedding of a loved one. But God's beauty resounds in even the most commonplace routines and events of our lives. Our challenge is to take the emotions and wisdom God imparts on us during these holy moments of our lives that are analogous to what Peter saw on the mountain top and apply them to the situations in which it is particularly difficult to notice God's presence and love.
