Lent 2019

Lenten Reflections: Ash Wednesday 2019

STM Lenten ImageMatthew’s Gospel is a fitting introduction to Ash Wednesday.  Jesus’ admonition addresses the very essence of Christianity – do the right thing because it is right, not for the anticipated rewards.  In the Old Testament, the Lord offered such benefits as abundant harvests, victorious battles, and numerous progeny for these actions.

Jesus takes a different approach.  He tells us that a virtuous life is one filled with generosity and good deeds for their own sake.  He exhorts us to “never let the left hand know what the right is doing”.

Studies are considered successful if the effect of the intervention lasts long after the study is completed.  After seventeen years of Father Bob’s daily spiritual guidance, this is my first Lent without him.  Will his impact continue?  Can we still hear his admonitions to live our faith seven days a week?  Can we follow his guidance to embody Christianity with our every action?

As we go through each day of Lent, are we inspired by the words and examples of Father Bob?  His ongoing impact on the direction of our lives should be the “miracles” needed for canonization.  His true legacy is his permanent mark on our spiritual lives.  If he has pointed us towards virtuous lives, he has done his part to make the world a better place.
