Thursday of the Fifth Week of Lent: God Who Reaches Out

Covenant

In today’s reading, we are reminded of God’s unconditional love for us through the covenant with Abraham. As humans, we are imperfect as we sin, make mistakes and ignore God. And while these are all a part of being human, they also mean that we do not always do what God wants of us. Yet despite all that, we see in this passage today that God chooses to make the covenant with Abraham and not the other way around. It is God who reaches out to Abraham, and when we consider that God is God while Abraham is like us human, we can see just how much God values us. Instead of separating from us, God chooses to join us by coming down to our level.

God truly wants to be in a relationship with each and every one of us, and has already taken the first step to invite us into that relationship. God just asks of us to accept the invitation, and that is all we have to do. It is so simple yet so meaningful, and to me, that is what makes the relationship with God so beautiful. There is nothing more on our part than to be open to God, and once we do that, God will do the rest. When we open our hearts to God, we will have the opportunity to live out each day knowing that God is always watching over us, and in that, we will find joy and comfort. It is an amazing relationship that God gives us, and when we live with God in our minds and hearts, we become instruments of God’s will on earth. God works through us, and by being in a relationship with God, we are able to share that love with others to make the world a better place.
