FROM THE CHAPLAIN'S DESK

Dear Friends,
This fall semester, I have had the privilege to witness the vibrant and courageous faith of our students, and have had the opportunity to meet and get to know a number of our alumni, among them Eric Kim '02. MEET JOE CONNOLLY

The Editors of STM Magazine sat down with Joe Connolly, STM’s new Executive Director, to ask a few questions and learn more about him. This is what they learned:

Tell us about your family:
My wife Paula and I just celebrated our thirtieth wedding anniversary. Paula is from Dublin, and we experienced a fairy-tale, long distance romance long before there was any such thing as e-mail or Face-Time. We have been business partners as well as life partners, but most of all, still love being together after all these years.

MOLLY BURHANS: MAPPING THE ROMAN CATHOLIC CHURCH

I connected with Molly Burhans for the first time right on Park Street, in front of Saint Thomas More Chapel. It was shortly before a Sunday afternoon Mass, and we were both locking our “mules” (I, my bike and Molly, her scooter)to the parking meter in front of the Chapel. It struck me that since we both seemed dedicated to sustainable ways of transportation as well as to Mass attendance, our lives must be sharing some core commitments.

SPENDING TIME WITH MY “SACRED HEART SISTERS”: STM SUMMER AMBASSADOR EXPERIENCE

As a high school student at Newton Country Day School of the Sacred Heart (Newton, MA), I often heard about “our sister schools in Uganda,” but I had very little knowledge of the schools, the students, or Uganda in general. This past summer, I had the opportunity to travel as a STM Summer Ambassador to Uganda, not only for my doctoral research on tuberculosis, but also to volunteer at Kangole Girls Senior Secondary School, my own high school’s “sister school in Uganda.”

UNDERSTANDING THROUGH DIALOGUE: INTERFAITH JERUSALEM PANEL

What can we do?” was the first question posed to a filled lecture hall at“Jerusalem: One City, Three Faith Perspectives.” This hour-long panel discussion — a groundbreaking collaboration between STM, the Joseph Slifka Center for Jewish Life at Yale, the Muslim Student Association at Yale and the Interfaith Club at Yale Divinity School — addressed this question through compelling interfaith dialogue about “the importance of Jerusalem in Judaism Christianity and Islam.”

CHRIST AT THE CENTER: PRAYING WITH THE TAIZE BROTHERS

When I was a student at Yale Divinity School, a mentor encouraged me to make a pilgrimage to the Taizé Community in France. I knew nothing of Taizé except for the brief history I read on Wikipedia. Originally founded in 1940 by Brother Roger as a hideaway for Jews during World War II, the Taizé community is now an ecumenical monastic order composed of over one-hundred Catholic and Protestant brothers from around the world.

FAITH IN THE REAL WORLD: VENTURE INVESTING AS A CALLING

As a frequent business traveler, “Uber-ing” is a weekly if not daily occurrence. Arriving at New Haven station a few weeks ago, I opened the app, business as usual, and put in a request to be picked up. Through the marvels of technology, a match occurred within seconds and a pro-active call from Adam, my Uber driver, set a new standard for service on the platform. “Would you like me to pick you up outside the station doors? Or, as that can get congested, I’m happy to pull up to the parking lot if more convenient for you.”
